Traditional Sashiko cloth produced by Olympus, which is the largest and most respected supplier of Sashiko supplies in Japan.
Because Sashiko is a functional craft originally designed for reinforcing and quilting, the traditional cloth has a very specific "soft" hand-feel that can feel quite different from modern fabrics.
Traditional Weave: Authentic Japanese Sashiko cotton is woven with a slightly looser, more breathable grain. This is intentional; it allows the thick, multi-stranded Sashiko thread to pass through the fabric smoothly without snagging or puckering.
Structure through Stitching: While the cloth may feel lightweight on its own, it is designed to gain its strength and "heavier" feel once the embroidery is completed. The thread itself provides the structural integrity.
